Synchronizing large eddy simulations with direct numerical simulations via data assimilation

The synchronization of large eddy simulations to direct numerical via a data assimilation scheme is investigated in Kolmogorov flows, where the scales velocity field are replaced by those simulations. We show that, when amount assimilated exceeds threshold given wavenumber, all with same subgrid-scale model converge an orbit that synchronized phase. wavenumbers for standard and dynamic Smagorinsky models smaller than mixed reduced filter scale increases. error examined detail. reveal larger scales, unexpectedly, simulated can be more accurate one calculated model. robustness results assessed perturbed random noise homogeneous turbulence which driven linear forcing term. Good still obtained both cases. display better performance
