Synchrotron Characterisation of Ultra-Fine Grain TiB2/Al-Cu Composite Fabricated by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

چکیده
Abstract Isotropy in microstructure and mechanical properties remains a challenge for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processed materials due to the epitaxial growth rapid cooling LPBF. In this study, high-strength TiB 2 /Al-Cu composite with random texture was successfully fabricated by using pre-doped powder. A series of advanced characterisation techniques, including synchrotron X-ray tomography, correlative focussed ion beam–scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), scanning transmission (STEM), situ diffraction, were applied investigate defects as-fabricated across multiple length scales. The study showed ultra-fine grains an average grain size about 0.86 μm, formed condition solidification particles promoting heterogeneous nucleation. yield strength total elongation 317 MPa 10%, respectively. contributions fine grains, solid solutions, dislocations, particles, Guinier–Preston (GP) zones calculated. Failure found be initiated from largest lack-of-fusion pore, as revealed tomography during tensile loading. diffraction used characterise lattice strain evolution loading, providing important data development crystal-plasticity models.

Functionalization of Biomedical Ti6Al4V via In Situ Alloying by Cu during Laser Powder Bed Fusion Manufacturing
The modern medical industry successfully utilizes Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) to manufacture complex custom implants. Ti6Al4V is one of the most commonly used biocompatible alloys. In surgery practice, infection at the bone-implant interface is one of the key reasons for implant failure. Therefore, advanced implants with biocompatibility and antibacterial properties are required. Modificatio...
متن کاملStudy of the Microstructure and Cracking Mechanisms of Hastelloy X Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion
Hastelloy X (HX) is a Ni-based superalloy which suffers from high crack susceptibility during the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. In this work, the microstructure of as-built HX samples was rigorously investigated to understand the main mechanisms leading to crack formation. The microstructural features of as-built HX samples consisted of very fine dendrite architectures with dimensions...
متن کاملPower Characterisation for Fine-Grain Reconfigurable Fabrics
This paper proposes a benchmarking methodology for characterising the power consumption of the fine-grain fabric in reconfigurable architectures. This methodology is part of the GroundHog 2009 power benchmarking suite. It covers active and inactive power as well as advanced low-power modes. A method based on random number generators is adopted for comparing activity modes. We illustrate our app...

The importance of lightweight materials such as titanium and magnesium in various technical applications, for example aerospace, medical implants and lightweight construction is well appreciated. The present study is an attempt to combine and improve the mechanical properties of these two materials by forming an ultra-fine grained composite. The material, with a composition of 75 vol% (88.4 wt%...
