System-Level Simulation for Integrated Phase-Change Photonics

Conventional computing systems are limited in performance by the well-known von Neumann bottleneck, arising from physical separation of processor and memory units. The use electrical signals such also limits speeds introduces significant energy losses. There is thus a pressing need for unconventional approaches, ones that can exploit high bandwidths/speeds low losses intrinsic to photonics. A promising platform purpose offered integrated phase-change Here, chalcogenide materials incorporated into standard photonics devices deliver wide-ranging computational functionality, including non-volatile fast, low-energy arithmetic neuromorphic processing. We report development compact behavioral model photonic devices, one which fast enough allow system level simulations be run reasonable timescale with basic resources, while being accurate capture key operating characteristics real devices. Moreover, our readily commercially available simulation software circuits, thereby enabling design, optimization large-scale systems. demonstrate capabilities exploring two important recently reported, namely spiking neural network matrix-vector crossbar array (photonic tensor core). Results show significantly facilitate design at level, as well expediting exploration novel architectures.
