چکیده

Abstract Self-control failure occurs when an individual experiences a conflict between immediate desires and longer-term goals, recognises psychological forces that hinder goal-directed action, tries to resist them but fails in the attempt. Behavioural economists often invoke assumptions about self-control justify proposals for policy interventions. These arguments require workable methods eliciting individuals’ goals verifying occurrences of failure, developing such confronts two problems. First, it is not clear are context-independent. Second, facing actual desire self-acknowledged goal, person may consciously choose desire, thinking spontaneity more important than self-control. We address these issues through online survey elicited self-reported judgements relative importance conflicts enjoyment health-related goals. To test context-sensitivity, judgement-elicitation questions were preceded by memory recall task which directed participants’ attention either acting on or satisfaction achieving found little evidence context-sensitivity. In both treatments, however, favoured expressed with roughly same frequency strength as judgments

Taking the Pirahã Seriously

We propose first order formal theories Γn, with n ≥ 1, and Γ = ⋃ n≥1 Γn, which can be roughly described as follows: each one of these theories axiomatizes a bounded universe, with a greatest element, modelled on Sergeyev’s so-called grossone; each such theory is consistent if predicative arithmetic I∆0 + Ω1 is; inside each such theory one can represent (in a weak, precisely specified, sense) th...

Taking I/O Seriously: Resolution Reconsidered for Disk

Modern compilation techniques can give Prolog programs, in the best cases, a speed comparable to C. However, Prolog has proven to be unacceptable for data-oriented queries for two major reasons: its sometimes poor termination and complexity properties for Datalog, and its tuple-at-a-time strategy. A number of tabling frameworks and systems have addressed the rst problem, most notably the XSB sy...
