Teaching English for Intensive Program: A Need Analysis

In UIN Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri, most students, who had taken an English Proficiency Test at the beginning of academic year to recognize students' proficiency, did not achieve a passing grade (450 points) test. This condition drives institution improve student's proficiency through intensive language program that Language Development Unit organizes. The research uses descriptive study analyze data from questionnaire, in which each item is analyzed individually. Fifty questionnaire answers and interview ten lecturers are grouped identify their real needs. evaluated descriptively based on percentage student responses. results show skills needed courses listening, structure written expression, reading. Most said students lacked grammar. Therefore, need expression materials, reading skills—the essential our writing. Also, vocabulary grammar aspects should be improved class. When developing material, target needs analysis considered, including skills, aspects, learning objectives, time commitment Intensive program.
