Tectonophysics Perspectives on Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) Science

This article is composed of two independent opinion pieces about the state integrated, coordinated, open, and networked (ICON) principles (Goldman et al., 2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021EO153180; Goldman 2022, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021ea002099) in Tectonophysics discussion on opportunities challenges adopting them. Each piece focuses a different topic: (a) global collaboration, technology transfer application, reproducibility, data sharing infrastructure; (b) field, experimental, remote sensing, real-time research application. Within tectonophysics science, ICON-FAIR are starting to be adopted implemented, however they have not become frequent there still plenty for further development. During last decade, standardization reduced fragmentation, facilitated openly available databases, enabled modeling methods combined. On other hand, integration coordination remained insufficient as exemplified by numerous geophysical interpretation programs running platforms, lacking proper documentation with diverse output formats. We agree that adapting brings high efforts risks, but end, it has great benefits potential community.
