Testing random assignment to peer groups

چکیده

Identification of peer effects is complicated by the fact that individuals under study may select their peers. Random assignment to groups has proven useful sidestep such a concern. In absence formal randomization mechanism, it needs be argued “as good as” random. This paper introduces simple yet powerful test do so. We provide theoretical results for this test. As by-product, we equally obtain an approach popularized Guryan et al. (2009). These help explain why suffers from low power, as been observed elsewhere.

Fair Peer Assignment Scheme for Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

The reciprocal virtue of peer-to-peer networking has stimulated an explosion of peer population and service capacity, ensuring rapid content distribution in peer-to-peer networks. Critical issues such as peer churn, free riding, and skewed workload significantly affect performance results such as service agility, fairness, and resource utilization. To resolve these problems systematically, this...

Peer Effects with Random Assignment: Results for Dartmouth Roommates

This paper uses a unique data set to measure peer effects among college roommates. Freshman year roommates and dormmates are randomly assigned at Dartmouth College. I find that peers have an impact on grade point average and on decisions to join social groups such as fraternities. Residential peer effects are markedly absent in other major life decisions such as choice of college major. Peer ef...

Appendices for “Academic Peer Effects with Different Group Assignment Policies: Residential Tracking versus Random Assignment”

In table 1 I report mean values of selected student characteristics that are determined prior to university attendance, separately by tracking/random assignment period and by dormitory/non-dormitory status. I report p-values from testing if these means are equal across dormitory students in the tracking and random assignment periods (column 4) and across non-dormitory students in the tracking a...

Academic Peer Effects with Different Group Assignment Policies: Residential Tracking versus Random Assignment∗

A growing literature in the economics of education emphasizes the importance of peer effects in determining students’ academic outcomes. Most of the existing empirical literature uses natural experiments in which students are randomly assigned to peer groups to identify the causal effect of peer characteristics. However, their results provide no direct evidence regarding the policy-relevant pro...

Random Graphs for Peer-to-Peer Overlays

Modern peer-to-peer networks consist of several network layers and distributed algorithms providing features like indexing, ressource balancing, entry protocols, security, anonymity, and cryptography. Since peer-to-peer networks are highly dynamic, a fundamental task in the design of these networks is to provide high connectivity. We propose a solution by distributed random link exchange algori...
