The cellular basis of distinct thirst modalities

نویسندگان

چکیده

Thirst is sensed by two distinct types of stimuli – osmotic and hypovolaemic. The authors show that in mice these act via separate mechanisms neuron types, lead to drinking behavioural responses. High blood osmolality induces thirst drives water consumption. By contrast, hypovolaemia intake both salt-containing solutions.

The cellular basis of albuminuria.

The appearance of albumin in the urine has long been recognized as a cardinal feature of kidney disease and more recently has been shown to also be an independent cardiovascular risk factor associated with insulin resistance. Recent studies on rare human genetic variants, targeted gene disruption in mouse models and cultured glomerular cells in vitro have dramatically improved our understanding...

Cellular basis of mechanotransduction.

Physical forces, such as those due to gravity, are fundamental regulators of tissue development. To influence morphogenesis, mechanical forces must alter growth and function. Yet little is known about how cells convert mechanical signals into a chemical response. This presentation attempts to place the potential molecular mediators of mechanotransduction within the context of the structural com...

Thirst

hypothermia is an adjunct, purely a "metabolic crutch, providing additional time in which to pursue the specific treatment, whether medical or surgical." The pathophysiology of the major congenital and acquired cardiac lesions is discussed in terms of the applicability and usefulness of hypothermia. In addition, the author discusses and evaluates the varied clinical situations in which hypother...

Thirst

Our bodies are mostly water, and this water is constantly being lost through evaporative and other means. Thus the evolution of robust mechanisms for finding and consuming water has been critical for the survival of most animals. In this Primer, we discuss how the brain monitors the water content of the body and then transforms that physical information into the motivation to drink.
