Abstract The CMS experiment at CERN uses a two-stage triggering system composed of the Level-1 (L1), instrumented with custom-designed hardware boards an output rate 100 kHz, and High Level Trigger (HLT), streamlined version offline software reconstruction that runs on computing farm, allowing to store around 1.5 kHz rate. This paper presents an overall description of the CMS trigger system which is composed by the Level-1 Trigger and the High-Level Trigger subsystems. Details on the algorithms and selection criteria at a luminosity of 2x10 33 cm-2 s-1 are provided.
