The Flaring H 2 O Megamaser and Compact Radio Source in Mrk 348
We report on single-dish monitoring and extremely high angular resolution observations of the flaring H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. The H2O line is redshifted by ∼130 km s with respect to the systemic velocity, is very broad, with a FWHM of 130 km s, and has no detectable high velocity components within 1500 km s on either side of the strong line. Monitoring observations made w...

We report new observations of the H 2 O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. Following our initial detection in 2000 March using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, re-analysis of previous data on this source indicates that the maser was present but only marginally detectable in late 1997. Monitoring through late 2000 shows that the maser has again decreased to its original level. The H 2 O l...
متن کاملH2O megamaser emission from FR I radio galaxies
A systematic search for 22 GHz H2O megamaser emission is reported for 50 nearby (z <∼ 0.15) FR I galaxies. No detection was obtained, implying that ultraluminous H2O masers (LH2O > 10 3 L ) must be rare in early-type galaxies with FR I radio morphology. Despite higher radio core luminosities the detection rate for our sample is lower than in similar surveys of late-type Seyfert galaxies. This p...
متن کاملThe orientation of the Seyfert nucleus in Markarian 348
Multi-frequency observations of Mrk 348 are presented consisting of 2 epochs of MERLIN data at 5 GHz, ISOPHOT data at 170, 90, 60 and 25 μm, NOT images at U, B, R and I bands and data at 1350μm from the archive for SCUBA. The new optical images reveal a disrupted arm that ends towards the eastern companion of Mrk 348, consistent with the hypothesis that Mrk 348 and its companion form an interac...
متن کاملX-ray flaring activity of Markarian 421
We report results from a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 421, using archival data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. The flares are clearly seen over a wide range of timescales. The quasicontinuous coverage of the source with the All-SkyMonitor (ASM) reveals frequent occurrence of major flares that last for months. On a few occasions, the source was intensively m...
