Abstract. We investigate the link between warm-temperature extremes in Europe and persistence of large-scale atmospheric-circulation patterns for both winter summer, along with some possible physical mechanisms connecting two. assess atmospheric persistence, leveraging concepts from dynamical systems theory, reconcile this approach more conventional meteorological views persistence. find that wintertime warm spells are partly associated persistent zonal advection at surface level but display no statistically significant anomaly mid-troposphere. For summertime heatwaves, we a weak yet to anomalously circulation mid-troposphere, while there few anomalies pattern. further evidence strong signal. This suggests other radiative processes, example sensible heating adiabatic warming, as well local effects, could play important role than these events. thus argue configurations not necessary requirement results depend considerable extent on region tropospheric level.
