The Multi‐Decadal Response to Net Zero CO 2 Emissions and Implications for Emissions Policy

چکیده

How confident are we that CO2 emissions must reach net zero or below to halt CO2-induced warming? The IPCC's sixth assessment report concluded “limiting human-induced global warming a specific level requires … reaching at least emissions.” This is much stronger language than the special on of 1.5°C, which would be sufficient. Here show “approximately zero” better supported “at zero.” We estimate rate adjustment (RAZE) parameter (−0.24 +0.17%/yr), defined as fractional change in after cease. RAZE determines compatible with halting over multiple decades: 1.5°C-consistent scenarios, consistent anthropogenic +2.2 GtCO2/yr (5–95th percentile range spans −7.3 +6.2 GtCO2/yr), similar expected from unmodelled Earth system feedbacks.

Climate Stabilization at 2°C and Net Zero Carbon Emissions

The goal to stabilize global average surface temperature at lower than 2°C above pre-industrial level has been extensively discussed in climate negotiations. A number of publications state that achieving this goal will require net anthropogenic carbon emissions (defined as anthropogenic emissions minus anthropogenic sinks such as carbon capture and sequestration and reforestation) to be reduced...

Cumulative carbon emissions, emissions floors and short-term rates of warming: implications for policy.

A number of recent studies have found a strong link between peak human-induced global warming and cumulative carbon emissions from the start of the industrial revolution, while the link to emissions over shorter periods or in the years 2020 or 2050 is generally weaker. However, cumulative targets appear to conflict with the concept of a 'floor' in emissions caused by sectors such as food produc...

Policy Options for Controlling Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Implications for Agruculture

The pace of activity around climate change legislation picked up noticeably in 2007. The increased focus brought new legislative proposals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). These bills include cap-and-trade systems, and carbon taxes1 as well as energy bills that promote energy efficiency or renewables (Table 1). Many also include support for research and development for emission reduci...
