The Physics Experiment for a Laser - driven Electron Accelerator
A physics experiment for laser-driven, electron acceleration in a structureloaded vacuum is being carried out at Stanford University. The experiment is to demonstrate the linear dependence of the electron energy gain on the laser field strength. The accelerator structure, made of dielectric, is semi-open, with dimensions a few thousand times the laser wavelength. The electrons traverse the axis...
متن کاملAn Electron Source for a Laser Accelerator*
Laser accelerators offer the promise of producing attosecond electron bunches from a compact accelerator. Electron source requirements for laser accelerators are challenging in several respects, but are achievable. We discuss these requirements, and propose an injector design. Simulation and design work for essential components for a laser accelerator electron source suitable for a high energy ...
متن کاملLaser Electron Accelerator
An intense electromagnetic pulse can create a weak of plasma oscillations through the action of the nonlinear ponderomotive force. Electrons trapped in the wake can be accelerated to high energy. Existing glass lasers of power density lotsW/cm shone on plasmas of densities 10 8 cm can yield gigaelectronvolts of electron energy per centimeter of acceleration distance. This acceleration mechanism...
متن کاملLaser Plasma Electron Linear Accelerator
The generation of an ultrashort relativistic electron bunch from a strong laser-plasma interaction have been studied by particle-in-cell simulations and observed experimentally. The electron beam was generated from the plasma created by focusing a Ti: sapphire 12 TW (tera watt) laser pulse at the edge of helium gas jet expanded into the vacuum from a pulsed supersonic nozzle. The laser pulse du...
متن کاملLaser-driven Cyclotron Autoresonance Accelerator*
Theory is developed for the cyclotron autoresonance acceleration of electrons in a gently-focused Gaussian laser beam and a gently tapered axial magnetic field. Numerical simulation shows, for example, acceleration from 50 MeV to 178 MeV over a distance of 148 cm, using a 10.6 μm CO2 laser with a minimum spot size of 0.1 cm.
