چکیده
ABSTRACT We present a new method to determine the probability distribution of 3D shapes galaxy clusters from 2D images using stereology. In contrast conventional approach combining different data sets (such as X-rays, Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect, and lensing) fit model cluster for each cluster, our requires only single set, such X-ray observations or effect observations, consisting sufficiently large number clusters. Instead reconstructing shape an individual object, we recover function (PDF) observed The PDF is relevant statistical quantity, which can be compared with theory used test cosmological models. apply this publicly available Chandra 89 well-resolved Assuming ellipsoidal shapes, find that sample mixture prolate oblate preference oblateness most probable ratio principle axes 1.4 : 1.3 1. assumption not essential directly applicable non-ellipsoidal shapes. X-ray Surveys of Distant Galaxy Clusters
I review recent observational progress in the search for and study of distant galaxy clusters in the X-ray band, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the abundance of X-ray clusters out to z ∼1. Several on-going deep X-ray surveys have led to the discovery of a sizeable population of clusters at z > 0.5 and have the sensitivity to detect clusters beyond redshift one. These surveys have ...
متن کاملX–Ray galaxy clusters: constraints on models of galaxy formation
We present a self–consistent approach to the modeling of X–ray clusters of galaxies in a flat universe. Employing the Press & Schechter (1974) formalism to derive the mass function and relating the observable properties of clusters to their virial mass allows us to study the cluster X–ray distribution functions and their evolution with redshift. This approach differs from some results based on ...
متن کاملScaling laws in X - ray Galaxy Clusters
We present a study of the integrated physical properties of a sample of 28 X-ray galaxy clusters observed with Chandra at redshift between 0.4 and 1.3. In particular, we have twelve objects in the redshift range 0.4–0.6, five between 0.6 and 0.8, seven between 0.8 and 1 and four at z >1.0, compounding the largest sample available for such a study. We focus particularly on the properties and evo...
متن کاملHard X-ray Emission from Accretion Shocks around Galaxy Clusters
We show that the hard X-ray (HXR) emission observed from several galaxy clusters is naturally explained by a simple model, in which the nonthermal emission is produced by inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by electrons accelerated in cluster accretion shocks: The dependence of HXR surface brightness on cluster temperature is consistent with that predicted by the m...
