Quadratic Irrationals, Quadratic Ideals and Indefinite Quadratic Forms II

Let D = 1 be a positive non-square integer and let δ = √ D or 1+ √ D 2 be a real quadratic irrational with trace t = δ + δ and norm n = δδ. Let γ = P+δ Q be a quadratic irrational for positive integers P and Q. Given a quadratic irrational γ, there exist a quadratic ideal Iγ = [Q, δ + P ] and an indefinite quadratic form Fγ(x, y) = Q(x−γy)(x−γy) of discriminant Δ = t − 4n. In the first section,...

Ducci-sequences and cyclotomic polynomials

We study Ducci-sequences using basic properties of cyclotomic polynomials over F2. We determine the period of a given Ducci-sequence in terms of the order of a polynomial, and in terms of the multiplicative orders of certain elements in finite fields. We also compute some examples and study links between Duccisequences, primitive polynomials and Artin’s conjecture on primitive roots. © 2005 Els...

Ducci Sequences in Higher Dimensions

A Ducci sequence is a sequence of n-tuples of integers obtained by iterating the map (a1, . . . , an) !→ (|a1 − a2|, |a2 − a3|, . . . , |an − a1|). In this paper, we generalize the concept of Ducci sequences to sequences of d-dimensional arrays, extend some of the basic results on Ducci sequences to this case, and point out some new phenomena that occur. Our main tool is the description of Ducc...

Distribution of Reduced Quadratic Irrationals

Let Φ(N) denote the number of products of matrices [ 1 1 0 1 ] and [ 1 0 1 1 ] of trace equal to N , and Ψ(N) = N n=3 Φ(n) be the number of such products of trace at most N . We prove an asymptotic formula of type Ψ(N) = c1N 2 logN + c2N 2 + Oε(N ) as N → ∞. As a result, the Dirichlet series ∞ n=3 Φ(n)n −s has a meromorphic extension in the half-plane <(s) > 7 4 with a single, order two pole at...

Asymptotic Behavior of Certain Ducci Sequences Asymptotic Behavior of Certain Ducci Sequences

The Ducci map applied to vectors in R is considered. It is shown that for any starting vector, the corresponding sequence of iterates either eventually becomes periodic or, if not eventually periodic, asymptotically approaches the zero vector. A precise characterization of which vectors exhibit each of these separate behaviors is given.
