The Smallest Prime That Does Not Split Completely in a Number Field

We study the problem of bounding the least prime that does not split completely in a number field. This is a generalization of the classic problem of bounding the least quadratic non-residue. Here, we present two distinct approaches to this problem. The first is by studying the behavior of the Dedekind zeta function of the number field near 1, and the second by relating the problem to questions...

What is the Smallest Prime?

What is the first prime? It seems that the number two should be the obvious answer, and today it is, but it was not always so. There were times when and mathematicians for whom the numbers one and three were acceptable answers. To find the first prime, we must also know what the first positive integer is. Surprisingly, with the definitions used at various times throughout history, one was often...

The Number Field Sieve in the Medium Prime Case

In this paper, we study several variations of the number field sieve to compute discrete logarithms in finite fields of the form Fpn , with p a medium to large prime. We show that when n is not too large, this yields a Lpn(1/3) algorithm with efficiency similar to that of the regular number field sieve over prime fields. This approach complements the recent results of Joux and Lercier on the fu...

On the second smallest prime non-residue

Let χ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo a prime p. Let q1 < q2 denote the two smallest prime non-residues of χ. We give explicit upper bounds on q2 that improve upon all known results. We also provide a good upper estimate on the product q1q2 which has an upcoming application to the study of norm-Euclidean Galois fields.

How to Prove That a Committed Number Is Prime

The problem of proving a number is of a given arithmetic format with some prime elements, is raised in RSA undeniable signature, group signature and many other cryptographic protocols. So far, there have been several studies in literature on this topic. However, except the scheme of Camenisch and Michels, other works are only limited to some special forms of arithmetic format with prime element...
