Spectra of atomic theories

For a countable structure B, the spectrum is the set of Turing degrees of isomorphic copies of B. For complete elementary first order theory T , the spectrum is the set of Turing degrees of models of T . We answer a question from [1], showing that there is an atomic theory T whose spectrum does not match the spectrum of any structure.

T HE present edition of this work contains a number of corrections and additions; Birge's new set of fundamental constants has been adopted throughout, and various tables, especially the table of ionization potentials, have been brought up to date. The author is indebted to Professor J. W. Ellis of the University of California at Los Angeles for a list of errors and corrections ; several of the...

Theories of Structure versus Theories of Change

The dynamics/computation debate recalls a similar debate in the evolutionary biology community concerning the relative primacy of theories of structure versus theories of change. A full account of cognition will require a rapprochement between such theories and will include both computational and dynamical notions. The key to making computation relevant to cognition is not making it analog, but...

Structure of structure formation theories

We study the general structure of models for structure formation, with applications to the reverse engineering of the model from observations. Through a careful accounting of the degrees of freedom in covariant gravitational instability theory, we show that the evolution of structure is completely specified by the stress history of the dark sector. The study of smooth, entropic, sonic, scalar a...

Theories of Spiral Structure

Much as the discovery of these strange forms may be calculated to excite our curiosity, and to awaken an intense desire to learn something of the laws which give order to these wonderful systems, as yet, 1 think, we have no fair ground even for plausible conjecture. Lord Rosse (1850) A beginning has been made by Jeans and other mathematicians on the dynamical problems involved in the structure ...
