Thermodynamics of wetting, prewetting and surface phase transitions with surface binding

چکیده
Abstract In living cells, protein-rich condensates can wet the cell membrane and surfaces of membrane-bound organelles. Interestingly, many phase-separating proteins also bind to membranes leading a molecular layer bound molecules. Here we investigate how binding affects wetting, prewetting surface phase transitions. We derive thermodynamic theory for three-dimensional bulk in presence two-dimensional, flat membrane. At coexistence, find that facilitates complete wetting thus lowers angle. Moreover, below saturation concentration, formation thick at thereby shifts transition far concentration. The distinction between unbound molecules near leads large variety states complex diagrams with rich topology Our work suggests transitions combined represent versatile mechanism control domains intra-cellular surfaces.

Surface Effects On Wetting and Layering Transitions
Wetting phenomena plays an interesting role in the technological development of materials. Recently, much attention has been directed to the study of magnetic solid films. To understand, theoretically, the effect of surface on wetting and layering transitions in these systems, we will give in this chapter a presentation of several relevant recent theoretical works realized on wetting and layeri...
متن کاملSurface coupling effect on wetting and layering transitions
The effect of both surface coupling Js and surface magnetic field Hs on the dependency of the layering temperature TL as a function of the thickness N , of a spin−1/2 Ising film is studied using mean field theory. It is found that for Js greater than a critical value (Jsc = 1.30), the layering temperature decreases when the film thickness N increases for any values of Hs. While, for Js < Jsc, t...
متن کاملMorphological wetting transitions at ring-shaped surface domains.
The wetting behavior of ring-shaped (or annular) surface domains is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The ring-shaped domains are lyophilic and embedded in a lyophobic substrate. Liquid droplets deposited on these domains can attain a variety of morphologies depending on the liquid volume and on the dimensions of the ringlike surface domains. In the experiments, the liquid volume i...
متن کاملWetting and surface forces.
In this review we discuss the fundamental role of surface forces, with a particular emphasis on the effect of the disjoining pressure, in establishing the wetting regime in the three phase systems with both plane and curved geometry. The special attention is given to the conditions of the formation of wetting/adsorption liquid films on the surface of poorly wetted substrate and the possibility ...
متن کاملWetting and Prewetting on Ceramic Surfaces
The stabilization of nanoscale surficial amorphous films (SAFs) for Bi2O3 on ZnO, VOx on TiO2, SiOx on Si, and several other oxide systems provides evidence for the existence of prewetting phenomena with analogies in water and other simple systems, as well as the stabilization of intergranular amorphous films in ceramics. Experimental results show that in the subeutectic regime, the equilibrium...
