Focusing surface waves with an inhomogeneous metamaterial lens.
We propose a new type of surface wave lens that is made of a circular in-plane inhomogeneous metamaterial slab and numerically demonstrate its capability to focus surface waves at optical frequencies. This approach can achieve a smaller focal spot size than the previously demonstrated Ag plasmonic lens. The use of inhomogeneous metamaterials is to decrease the high losses that are usually assoc...
متن کاملLuneburg lens waveguide networks
We investigate certain configurations of Luneburg lenses that form light propagating and guiding networks. We study single Luneburg lens dynamics and apply the single lens ray tracing solution to various arrangements of multiple lenses. The wave propagating features of the Luneburg lens networks are also verified through direct numerical solutions of Maxwell’s equations. We find that Luneburg l...
متن کاملLuneburg lens in silicon photonics.
The Luneburg lens is an aberration-free lens that focuses light from all directions equally well. We fabricated and tested a Luneburg lens in silicon photonics. Such fully-integrated lenses may become the building blocks of compact Fourier optics on chips. Furthermore, our fabrication technique is sufficiently versatile for making perfect imaging devices on silicon platforms.
متن کاملHyperbolic Metamaterial Interface: Propagation of Surface Waves
Herein we study propagation of surface waves at a boundary of an isotropic media and a multilayered hyperbolic metamaterial. The structure dispersion is discussed for various cases of a hyperbolic metamaterial. It is demonstrated that it is possible to tune the frequency range of surface waves by varying the thickness of dielectric sheets. It is also shown that this frequency range can be broad...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical studies of terahertz surface waves on a thin metamaterial film.
We present experimental and numerical studies of localized terahertz surface waves on a subwavelength-thick metamaterial film consisting of in-plane split-ring resonators. A simple and intuitive model is derived that describes the propagation of surface waves as guided modes in a waveguide filled with a Lorentz-like medium. The effective medium model allows us to deduce the dispersion relation ...
