‘Thinking Through’ Games in the Classroom: Using Discursive Game Design to Play and Engage with Historical Datasets

In this contribution, we outline Discursive Game Design (DGD) as a practice-based educational framework, explain how to use design framework teach game historiography, and report on findings from series of in-class experiments. Using Nandeck, freely available software tool for card prototyping, created sets playing cards based two game-historical datasets. Students were then asked prototype simple games with these decks; both playtesting co-creating each other’s in an ongoing quasi-conversational process between different student groups fostered discussions on, produced alternative insights into, the complex notion (Dutch) history, canonization/selection national cultural heritage. The article shows DGD can be implemented allow students little or no background actively ‘think through’ about subject matter at hand.
