Toughening silica glass by imparting ductility using a small amount of silver nanoparticles

چکیده
Imparting ductility to glass effectively counters brittleness caused by stress concentration. Spark plasma sintering of silica (SiO2) nanopowder and a silver nitrate mixture successfully dispersed (Ag) nanoparticles into SiO2 matrix. The Ag-precipitated showed crack bridging during propagation softening owing the imparted Ag. Compared with glass, exhibited fewer cone cracks suppressed radial propagation, resulting in significantly improved fracture toughness (2.01 ± 0.2 MPam1/2 for SiO2).
