Towards a theory of morphosyntactic focus marking

چکیده
Abstract Based on six detailed case studies of languages in which focus is marked morphosyntactically, we propose a novel formal theory marking, can capture these as well the familiar English-type prosodic marking. Special attention paid to patterns syncretism, that is, when different size and/or location are indistinguishably realized by same form. The key ingredients our approach complex constituents (not just words) may be directly focally marked, and choice focal marking governed blocking.

Focus Marking via Gestures
This paper contributes to the recent investigations of speechaccompanying gestures under a formal semantic view. We show that gestures can serve to disambiguate a sentence with respect to its possible focus domains. We provide a statistical evaluation of data gained from a corpus annotated with gestures and information structure. The language under investigation is German. We argue that a sente...
متن کاملLacking Integrity: HPSG as a Morphosyntactic Theory
Standard accounts of HPSG assume a distinction between morphology and syntax. However, despite decades of research, no cross-linguistically valid definition of ‘word’ has emerged (Haspelmath, 2011), suggesting that no sharp distinction is justified. Under such a view, the basic units are morphemes, rather than words, but it has been argued this raises problems when analysing phenomena such as z...
متن کاملTowards the Adequate Evaluation of Morphosyntactic Taggers
There exists a well-established and almost unanimously adopted measure of tagger performance, namely, accuracy. Although it is perfectly adequate for small tagsets and typical approaches to disambiguation, we show that it is deficient when applied to rich morphological tagsets and propose various extensions designed to better correlate with the real usefulness of the tagger.
متن کاملAcoustic correlates of focus marking in Polish
Languages vary in the types of contexts that affect prosodic prominence. This paper reports on a production study investigating how different types of foci influence prosody in Polish. The results show that focus and givenness in Polish are both marked prosodically, with pitch and intensity as the main acoustic correlates. Polish patterns like English in showing prosodic focus marking in a broa...
متن کاملTowards a Morphosyntactic Analysis of Mandarin Mood/Aspect Marker ge
This paper provides a novel descriptive and theoretical account for the ‘down-play’ mood marker ge in Mandarin Chinese. One essential property that is not covered by previous studies is its clitic status. Incorporating and enhancing Yang’s (2001) clitic treatment of numeral-less classifiers, I propose a morphosyntactic analysis that identifies the morphological-template for the mood marker ge −...
