Embedding transition-metal atoms in graphene: structure, bonding, and magnetism.
We present a density-functional-theory study of transition-metal atoms (Sc-Zn, Pt, and Au) embedded in single and double vacancies (SV and DV) in a graphene sheet. We show that for most metals, the bonding is strong and the metal-vacancy complexes exhibit interesting magnetic behavior. In particular, an Fe atom on a SV is not magnetic, while the Fe@DV complex has a high magnetic moment. Surpris...
متن کاملProximity-induced magnetism in transition-metal substituted graphene
We investigate the interactions between two identical magnetic impurities substituted into a graphene superlattice. Using a first-principles approach, we calculate the electronic and magnetic properties for transition-metal substituted graphene systems with varying spatial separation. These calculations are compared for three different magnetic impurities, manganese, chromium, and vanadium. We ...
متن کاملEmergent magnetism at transition-metal-nanocarbon interfaces.
Charge transfer at metallo-molecular interfaces may be used to design multifunctional hybrids with an emergent magnetization that may offer an eco-friendly and tunable alternative to conventional magnets and devices. Here, we investigate the origin of the magnetism arising at these interfaces by using different techniques to probe 3d and 5d metal films such as Sc, Mn, Cu, and Pt in contact with...
متن کاملTunable magnetism in metal adsorbed fluorinated nanoporous graphene
Developing nanostructures with tunable magnetic states is crucial for designing novel data storage and quantum information devices. Using density functional theory, we investigate the thermodynamic stability and magnetic properties of tungsten adsorbed tri-vacancy fluorinated (TVF) graphene. We demonstrate a strong structure-property relationship and its response to external stimuli via defect ...
متن کاملMagnetism of Small Transition-metal Clusters and Effects of Isomerization
We investigate the magnetic properties of small transition-metal clusters using a simple statistical model, which requires some input data from ab-initio spin-density-functional calculations. In our study, we consider a thermodynamically equilibrated ensemble of clusters with different structures, spin multiplicities, and ground-state energies. We calculate the physical properties of this syste...
