One thing leads to another.
In 1956, the JCI published an article by Vincent Dole on a method for titrating plasma fatty acids that uncovered the importance of fatty acids as a substrate for glucose metabolism. When asked to prepare a historical perspective on this very popular paper, I paid Dole a visit and we reminisced. His answer to my question of how he came to do this work on plasma fatty acids was: "Well, one thing...

study cultured stem cells from human embryos can proceed without violating the federal ban on embryo research in general. Since that decision, a great deal of excitement has arisen over the possibility that treatment of neurological disease may take a giant leap forward in the near future. The secrets to everything from preventing Alzheimer's Disease to reversing spinal cord damage may soon be ...
متن کاملOn the Closed-Form Solution of a Nonlinear Difference Equation and Another Proof to Sroysang’s Conjecture
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First we derive theoretically, using appropriate transformation on x(n), the closed-form solution of the nonlinear difference equation x(n+1) = 1/(±1 + x(n)), n ∈ N_0. The form of solution of this equation, however, was first obtained in [10] but through induction principle. Then, with the solution of the above equation at hand, we prove a case ...
متن کاملUsing one spin-transition to trigger another in solid solutions of two different spin-crossover complexes.
Phase-pure solid solutions of [Co(terpy)(2)][BF(4)](2) and [M(bpp)(2)][BF(4)](2) (M = Fe or Ru, bpp = 2,6-dipyrazol-1-ylpyridine) have been prepared. The spin-state of the [Co(terpy)(2)](2+) dopant is modulated by the spin-state of the [Fe(bpp)(2)](2+) centres in the iron-containing materials.
متن کاملAging: One Thing Leads to Another
Mitochondria deteriorate during the aging process, but the underlying mechanisms for the decline of this critical organelle are unknown. A new study indicates that in yeast an age-dependent reduction in vacuolar acidification leads to mitochondrial dysfunction through a surprising mechanism: loss of vacuolar neutral amino acid transport.
