چکیده
Abstract In summer 2018, Central Europe was hit by an extreme drought event that widely impacted ecosystems and markedly increased tree mortality in forest across the continent. As climate models predict increase frequency severity of such events, there is urgent need to adapt forests order maintain diverse benefits they provide. Soil processes play essential role this context are key for a plethora terrestrial ecosystem functions, but strongly dependent on water availability. Here, we investigated how species richness (TSR), composition, identity 13‐year‐old temperate diversity experiment influenced selected functions (as important representatives different processes) during 2018 drought. We focused stability soil microbial biomass standard litter decomposition, as well species‐specific rates. Contrary our expectations, TSR did not generally resistance or decrease However, these determined community composition. For both (microbial decomposition), found effects depended presence certain species. Moreover, performance specific monoculture, Norway spruce, poor predictor its response mixtures. Taken together, results study demonstrate composition stands determines under This indicates enhancing multiple environmental disturbance requires maintaining forests.

Community composition affects the shape of mate response functions.
The evolution of mate preferences can be critical for the evolution of reproductive isolation and speciation. Heterospecific interference may carry substantial fitness costs and result in preferences where females are most responsive to the mean conspecific trait with low response to traits that differ from this value. However, when male traits are unbounded by heterospecifics, there may not be...
متن کاملDual functions of phospholipase Dalpha1 in plant response to drought.
Phospholipase Dalpha1 (PLDalpha1) has been shown to mediate the abscisic acid regulation of stomatal movements. Arabidopsis plants deficient in PLDalpha1 increased, whereas PLDalpha1-overexpressing tobacco decreased, transpirational water loss. In the early stage of drought, the decrease in water loss was associated with a rapid stomatal closure caused by a high level of PLD in PLDalpha1-overex...

متن کاملA Drought Indicator based on Ecosystem Responses to Water Availability: The Normalized Ecosystem Drought Index
Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters causing serious damages to human society, and studies have projected more severe and widespread droughts in the coming decades associated with the warming climate. Although several drought indices have been developed for drought monitoring, most of them were based on large scale environmental conditions rather than ecosystem transitional ...
متن کاملResponse of ecosystem carbon fluxes to drought events in a poplar plantation in Northern China
Poplar plantations are widely used for timber production and ecological restoration in northern China, a region that experiences frequent droughts and water scarcity. An open-path eddy-covariance (EC) system was used to continuously measure the carbon, water, and energy fluxes in a poplar plantation during the growing season (i.e., April–October) over the period 2006–2008 in the Daxing District...
