چکیده

We develop a study protocol to efficiently and accurately identify the raw material categories constituting lithic assemblages at Umhlatuzana rockshelter, South Africa. combine visual analytical methods establish database provide more accurate insight into selection during Pleistocene Middle Later Stone Age occupational sequence of Umhlatuzana. The combines petrological properties (as studied on micromorphological samples), elemental composition specimens measured with p-XRF) characterization by analysts. tested applying it sample piece-plotted lithics from four spits across stratigraphic sequence. document intensive use sandstone accounting for 25% sample. also report larger importance hornfels lower proportion quartz than was reported in previous analyses (Kaplan 1990). combination p-XRF analysis demonstrates that only inspection, variability materials used may be misinterpreted. With datasets, we are better equipped answer techno-economic questions southern African Age.

A demographic perspective on the Middle to Later Stone Age transition from Nasera rockshelter, Tanzania.

Increased population density is among the proposed drivers of the behavioural changes culminating in the Middle to Later Stone Age (MSA-LSA) transition and human dispersals from East Africa, but reliable archaeological measures of demographic change are lacking. We use Late Pleistocene-Holocene lithic and faunal data from Nasera rockshelter (Tanzania) to show progressive declines in residential...

Middle Stone Age shell beads from South Africa.

There are two competing models for the emergence of modern human behavior: first, a late emergence in Africa or Eurasia at 50 to 40 thousand years ago (ka), and second, a gradual transition in Africa between 250 to 50 ka (1). In both models, personal ornaments and art are unquestioned expressions of symbolism that equate with modern human behavior. The earliest undisputed African personal ornam...

The Earlier Stone Age Lithic Assemblage from Wonderwerk Cave, Northern Cape Province, South Africa

The site of Wonderwerk Cave, located in the Northern Cape Province between the towns of Danielskuil and Kuruman, preserves an extraordinary sequence that spans close to 2 million years of hominin activity (see Chazan and Horwitz, this volume, for an overview of the site). The earliest phases of occupation have only been recovered in Excavation 1 near the front of the cave in excavations carried...

Border Cave and the beginning of the Later Stone Age in South Africa.

The transition from the Middle Stone Age (MSA) to the Later Stone Age (LSA) in South Africa was not associated with the appearance of anatomically modern humans and the extinction of Neandertals, as in the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in Western Europe. It has therefore attracted less attention, yet it provides insights into patterns of technological evolution not associated with a ne...

Why Was Silcrete Heat-Treated in the Middle Stone Age? An Early Transformative Technology in the Context of Raw Material Use at Mertenhof Rock Shelter, South Africa

People heat treated silcrete during the Middle Stone Age (MSA) in southern Africa but the spatial and temporal variability of this practice remains poorly documented. This paucity of data in turn makes it difficult to interrogate the motive factors underlying the application of this technique. In this paper we present data on heat treatment of silcrete through the Howiesons Poort and post-Howie...
