Ultra‐Slow Discharges That Precede Lightning Initiation

چکیده
We report on ultra-slowly propagating discharge events with speeds in the range 1–13 km/s, much lower than any known lightning process. The propagation of these discharges are orders magnitude slower leader or streamer speeds, but faster ion drift speed. For one particular event, a forms about 40 ms later within 50 m discharge, likely same high field region. A second slow event 9 prior to initiation, and leads into negative leader. Most appear not be directly involved initiation. This suggests that classic cascade model initiation is always definitive In this work we describe displaying unique behavior, their relation common discharges, implications for

Ion runaway in lightning discharges.
Runaway ions can be produced in plasmas with large electric fields, where the accelerating electric force is augmented by the low mean ionic charge due to the imbalance between the number of electrons and ions. Here we derive an expression for the high-energy tail of the ion distribution function in lightning discharges and investigate the energy range that the ions can reach. We also estimate ...
متن کاملPositive and Bipolar Lightning Discharges: a Review
Characteristics of lightning discharges that transport either positive charge or both negative and positive charges to ground are reviewed. Different types of positive and bipolar discharges are discussed.
متن کاملPhotogrammetric 3d Reconstruction of Lightning Discharges
A computer vision setup is presented for the automated detection and multi-view 3D reconstruction of lightning discharges. The system is designed to operate autonomously in a continuous mode and provide accurate position information of the lightning discharge path and impact point relative to its surrounding area. Extensive tests in a medium scale laboratory environment show that a relative mea...
متن کاملOn phenomenology of compact intracloud lightning discharges
[1] We examined wideband electric fields, electric and magnetic field derivatives, and narrowband VHF (36 MHz) radiation bursts produced by 157 compact intracloud discharges (CIDs). These poorly understood lightning events appear to be the strongest natural producers of HF‐VHF radiation. All the events transported negative charge upward (or lowered positive charge), 150 were located by the U.S....
متن کاملSprites triggered by negative lightning discharges
High altitude air breakdown, manifested as “red sprites,” is reported in close association with negative cloudto-ground lightning (−CG) on at least two occasions above an unusual storm on August 29, 1998. Data from high speed photometry, low-light-level video, and receivers of lightning electromagnetic signatures in the frequency range 10 Hz to 20 kHz are used to establish the association and i...
