Conditional Expectations for Unbounded Operator Algebras

Two conditional expectations in unbounded operator algebras (O∗-algebras) are discussed. One is a vector conditional expectation defined by a linear map of an O∗-algebra into the Hilbert space on which the O∗-algebra acts. This has the usual properties of conditional expectations. This was defined by Gudder and Hudson. Another is an unbounded conditional expectation which is a positive linear m...

Operator Algebras and Dual Spaces

1. An isomorphism theorem. In this paper we discuss a particular method of introducing a convolution product into certain topological linear spaces so that they become algebras. The space in each case will be essentially the dual space of a linear space of continuous functions, and arises in the study of general group algebras and in the theory of distributions. Let G be a topological group, wr...

Bicommutants of Reduced Unbounded Operator Algebras

The unbounded bicommutant (ME′ ) ′′ wc of the reduction of an O*algebra Mvia a given projection E weakly commuting with M is studied, with the aim of finding conditions under which the reduction of a GW*-algebra is a GW*-algebra itself. The obtained results are applied to the problem of the existence of conditional expectations on O*-algebras.

Operator Algebras on L Spaces Which “look Like” C*-algebras

This talk is a survey of operator algebras on L spaces which “look like” C*algebras. Its aim is to give a general impression of the field, and why I am hopeful that there is a rich theory waiting to be discovered. It does not aim to have you remember technical details, or even the precise statements of all the theorems. This file contains more than will be in the talk. Warning: It has not been ...

Operator Spaces and Residually Finite-dimensional C * -algebras

For every operator space X the C∗-algebra containing it in a universal way is residually finite-dimensional (that is, has a separating family of finitedimensional representations). In particular, the free C∗-algebra on any normed space so is. This is an extension of an earlier result by Goodearl and Menal, and our short proof is based on a criterion due to Exel and Loring.
