Uncertainty and Activity Selection in New Product Development: An Experimental Study

نویسندگان

چکیده

Uncertainty drives project activity in new product development (NPD), and its resolution is crucial to performance. However, there a major gap understanding the causal links between different uncertainty types activities they trigger. Engineering managers lack guidance on how best respond types. We close this by experimentally contrasting responses two central NPD: technical organizational uncertainty. describe with respect core engineering activities: representation, information, knowledge sharing. present evidence from an experiment involving 50 professionals 74 master's students. The results show that type has significant effect response, ordering within response. Based identification of response type, change situation, our findings situation representation activity, while information- knowledge-sharing activities. This provides basis for three main contributions article. First, we identify “change situation” as NPD. Second, Third, characterize

Adverse Selection in Online New-Goods Market: An Analysis of Product Uncertainty and Seller Uncertainty

Online markets play an important role for both online sellers and online buyers. Previous research has identified problems of information asymmetry in the online used goods markets, this research explore whether there are similar problems in the new-goods online markets. Grounded in “lemon market” theory, this study used panel data captured from eBay Motors. Employing Ordinary Least Squares ana...

Team Empowerment, Uncertainty, and Performance In New Product Development

A recent theoretical analysis argues that the effectiveness of empowerment is contingent upon the degree of uncertainty in the environment (Wall, Cordery and Clegg 2002). In a study of 212 New Product Development (NPD) projects we found that the relationship between team empowerment and speed-to-market was moderated by uncertainty stemming from technological turbulence but not by uncertainty re...

A Simulation-Based Optimization Model for Scheduling New Product Development Projects in Research and Development Centers

a simulation-based optimization approach for the purpose of finding a near-optimal answer can be efficient and effective. In the present paper, first, the mathematical model for the project activity scheduling problem has been presented with a job shop approach. Then, using the Arena 14 software, the simulation model has been designed. Consequently, a numerical example has been solved via runni...
