Underground Tests of Quantum Mechanics by the VIP Collaboration at Gran Sasso

Modern physics lays its foundations on the pillars of Quantum Mechanics (QM), which has been proven successful to describe microscopic world atoms and particles, leading construction Standard Model. Despite big success, old open questions at very heart, such as measurement problem wave function collapse, are still open. Various theories consider scenarios could encompass a departure from predictions standard QM, extra-dimensions or deformations Lorentz/Poincaré symmetries. At Italian National Gran Sasso underground Laboratory LNGS, we search for evidence new proceeding models beyond using radiation detectors. Collapse addressing gravity-related Diósi–Penrose (DP) Continuous Spontaneous Localization (CSL) models, predict emission spontaneous radiation, allows experimental tests. Using high-purity Germanium detector, exclude natural parameterless version DP model put strict bounds CSL one. In addition, forbidden atomic transitions prove possible violation Pauli Exclusion Principle (PEP) in closed systems. The VIP-2 experiment is currently operation, aiming detecting PEP-violating signals Copper with electrons; VIP-3 upgrade foreseen become operative next few years. We discuss VIP-Lead systems, strong it sets classes non-commutative quantum gravity theories, θ–Poincaré theory.
