Urbanization, long-run growth, and the demographic transition

چکیده
Abstract Advanced economies undergo three transitions during their development: (1) transition from a rural to an urban economy, (2) low-income growth high-income growth, (3) high fertility and mortality rates low modern levels. The timings of these are correlated in the historical development most advanced economies. I consider nonlinear model endogenous long-run economic demographic change, which child quantity-quality substitution is driven by declining mortality. Because captures interactions between all transitions, it able explain additional empirical patterns: urban-rural wage gap, rural-urban family size ratio, surprisingly, that early urbanization slows development. This third prediction distinguishes other theories document evidence for cross-country data.

متن کاملThe Short and Long Run Causality between Agglomeration and Productivity
This study is to investigate the short- and long-run causal relationship between agglomeration (localization and urbanization) economies and labor productivity in the manufacturing sector of 28 Iranian provinces over an 11-year period, 2001–2011. Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method was used to estimate our long-run panel data model. The empirical findings suggested that localiz...

The world and most regions and countries are experiencing unprecedentedly rapid demographic change. The most obvious example of this change is the huge expansion of human numbers: four billion have been added since 1950. متن کاملThe religious transition . A long - run perspective
We use factor analysis to derive a robust measure of religiosity from items reported in five waves of the World Value Survey. Our measure of religiosity is negatively correlated with per capita income. Development apparently causes religiosity to fall to about half its pre-modern level. Most components of the demand for religion are reduced by development. The supply of religion declines once c...
