Using a systems perspective to understand hospital falls among patients with dementia

چکیده
• A systems approach can help to broaden our understanding of falls prevention amongst patients with dementia. Hospital training programmes incorporate thinking into the educational process. Current interventions will benefit from use a approach. : Falls are frequent event among older adults dementia during their hospital stay. This qualitative study explores factors contributing in this population using perspective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted 32 carers and 20 staff who worked on medical wards. Interview transcripts analysed thematically framework. The themes generated research related the: patient (e.g. physical health), carer ability re-call patient's past history), teamwork), policies transfer between wards), environment lack observation side rooms for infectious at risk some wards) equipment walking aid). We recommend that future intervention need be supported by credible aiming improve outcomes relation prevention.

متن کاملCan falls in patients with dementia be prevented?
The annual incidence of falls in patients with dementia is 40-60% [1, 2], twice the rate of the equivalent cognitively normal elderly population [1]. Serious injury is more common and one-quarter of patients with dementia who fall sustain a fracture: three times the age-adjusted figure for expected fracture incidence [1, 3, 4]. In addition, patients with dementia who fall have a poorer prognosi...
متن کاملRisk Factors for Falls in Hospital In-Patients: A Prospective Nested Case Control Study
Background Patient falls are considered a challenge to the patient’s safety in hospitals, which, in addition to increasing the length of stay and costs, may also result in severe injuries or even the death of the patient. This study aims to investigate the associations between risk factors among fallers in comparison with the control group. Methods A prospective nested...
متن کاملUsing Knowledge Representation to Understand Interactive Systems
System migration presents a myriad of challenges in software maintenance. The user interfaces of interactive systems can undergo significant change during migration. Program understanding techniques can be used to create abstract models of the user interface that can be used to generate a new user interface on the target platform. Using a knowledge representation to model the abstractions has t...
