Using ecological partitions to assess zooplankton biogeography and seasonality

چکیده
Zooplankton play a crucial role in marine ecosystems as the link between primary producers and higher trophic levels, such they are key components of global biogeochemical ecosystem models. While phytoplankton spatial-temporal dynamics can be tracked using satellite remote sensing, no analogous data product is available to validate zooplankton model output. We develop procedure for linking irregular sparse observations mesozooplankton biomass with output assess regional seasonality mesozooplankton. use from biogeochemical/ecosystem partition ocean according seasonal patterns modeled biomass. compare magnitude temporal situ averaged within each partition. Our analysis shows strong correlations little bias temperate, strongly seasonally variable regions. Substantial discrepancies exist tropical partitions. Correlations partitions were not significant some cases negative. Seasonal changes weak, driven primarily by local perturbations velocity extent currents. Microzooplankton composed larger fraction total these regionsWe also examined ability represent several dominant taxonomic groups. identified Calanus species North Atlantic Euphausiacea Southern Ocean that well represented model. This partition-scale comparison captures biogeochemically important matches mismatches models, suggesting elaborating models adding trait differences mixotrophy may improve model-data comparisons. propose where well, defined quantify spatio-temporal dynamics.

Advances and Limitations of Disease Biogeography Using Ecological Niche Modeling
Mapping disease transmission risk is crucial in public and animal health for evidence based decision-making. Ecology and epidemiology are highly related disciplines that may contribute to improvements in mapping disease, which can be used to answer health related questions. Ecological niche modeling is increasingly used for understanding the biogeography of diseases in plants, animals, and huma...
متن کاملComposition, Abundance and Seasonality of Zooplankton in Mida Creek, Kenya
Samples were collected monthly at four fixed stations in Mida creek from May 1996 to April 1997, in order to determine the species composition, abundance and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton collected with 20and 332-μm mesh size plankton nets respectively. Sampling also included measurement of salinity and temperature. Peaks in phytoplankton abundance occurred in May and January, foll...
متن کاملEcological and Historical Factors in Fern Biogeography
Remarkable diversity in recognized endemic centres as well as noteworthy disjunct distributions have led students of the pteridophytes to seek historical explanations for these phenomena. A suite of distinctive attributes limit the array of possible explanations: most biogeographically significant are ( I ) the smaller number of species-range determinants, and (2) the substantial capacity for l...
