Using integrative taxonomy to distinguish cryptic halfbeak species and interpret distribution patterns, fisheries landings, and speciation

Context Species classification disputes can be resolved using integrative taxonomy, which involves the use of both phenotypic and genetic information to determine species boundaries. Aims Our aim was clarify boundaries two commercially important cryptic halfbeak (Hemiramphidae), whose distributions overlap in south-eastern Australia, assist fisheries management. Methods We applied an taxonomic approach Key results Mitochondrial DNA morphological data exhibited significant differences between species. The low level mitochondrial divergence, coupled with lack difference nuclear DNA, suggests that these diverged relatively recently (c. 500 000 years ago) when compared other within Hyporhamphus genus (>2.4 million ago). Genetic were accompanied by modal gill raker counts, mean upper-jaw preorbital length, otolith shape. Conclusions On basis differences, as well intergradation along overlapping their geographical distributions, we propose australis melanochir remain valid Implications This study has illustrated need for assessing provided a methodological framework studying fish management context.
