چکیده
Waste-to-energy is a promising approach for environmental sustainability. We examined the usage of watermelon rind waste coupled with nitrite-containing wastewater electricity production in membraneless biocathode microbial fuel cell (MB-MFC). Results showed that maximum voltage output internal nitrite circulation fed-batch mode was 294 mV, which 1.4 and 1.3 times without continuous mode, respectively. Watermelon quickly fermented to organic acids dominated acetate lactate during generation. The most dominant genus cathodic biofilm Lactobacillus relative abundance 74%, while two dominative genera Clostridium sensu stricto Bacteroides anodic had similar approximately 18%. Three microbes cooperated well producing converting nitrogen gas. Additionally, we found key genes nirS/K, conrB nosZ involved reduction. Our results suggest feasibility harnessing electrical energy from MB-MFC as substrates electron acceptor.

Performance of Denitrifying Microbial Fuel Cell with Biocathode over Nitrite
Microbial fuel cell (MFC) with nitrite as an electron acceptor in cathode provided a new technology for nitrogen removal and electricity production simultaneously. The influences of influent nitrite concentration and external resistance on the performance of denitrifying MFC were investigated. The optimal effectiveness were obtained with the maximum total nitrogen (TN) removal rate of 54.80 ± 0...

متن کاملHydrogen and electricity production from a food processing wastewater using fermentation and microbial fuel cell technologies.
Hydrogen can be produced from fermentation of sugars in wastewaters, but much of the organic matter remains in solution. We demonstrate here that hydrogen production from a food processing wastewater high in sugar can be linked to electricity generation using a microbial fuel cell (MFC) to achieve more effective wastewater treatment. Grab samples were taken from: plant effluent at two different...
متن کاملProduction of electricity during wastewater treatment using a single chamber microbial fuel cell.
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been used to produce electricity from different compounds, including acetate, lactate, and glucose. We demonstrate here that it is also possible to produce electricity in a MFC from domestic wastewater, while atthe same time accomplishing biological wastewater treatment (removal of chemical oxygen demand; COD). Tests were conducted using a single chamber microbi...
