Using wing length for sexing Eurasian Skylark <i>Alauda arvensis</i>: examples from a British population

نویسندگان

چکیده

The Skylark Alauda arvensis is a common, yet rarely ringed species. Outside the breeding season, determining sex of individual birds problematic. While previous studies have provided sexually dimorphic ranges wing length, those based on accurate DNA sexing focus Continental populations, which are subject to seasonal influxes migrants. In Britain, largely sedentary species, and guidelines in-the-hand might be inappropriate. Here we present comparative analysis morphometrics for 137 Skylarks, assess accuracy using length trapped birds. We suggest that with measurements 107–109 mm classified as ‘undetermined’ sex, below this range being female above male.

Recent changes in body weight and wing length among some British passerine birds

We tested the prediction that global warming has caused recent decreases in body weight (Bergmann’s rule) and increases in wing length (Allen’s rule) in 14 species of passerine birds at two localities in England: Wicken Fen (1968 /2003) and Treswell Wood (1973 /2003). Predicted long-term linear decreases in residual body weight occurred in four species: dunnocks (Wicken Fen), and great tits, bl...

Robust MRAC for a Wing Rock Phenomenon in Delta Wing Aircrafts

Wing rock phenomenon is an undesired motion appears in high angles of attack where a rolling in the aircraft in positive and negative roll angles with specified amplitude and frequency is occurred. In this paper two adaptive controllers suggested to control the rolling dynamics under wing rock phenomenon for a delta wing aircraft with presence of disturbance. Disturbance was considered as unmat...

Evolving Stochastic Context-Free Grammars from Examples Using a Minimum Description Length Principle

This paper describes an evolutionary approach to the problem of inferring stochastic context-free grammars from nite language samples. The approach employs a genetic algorithm, with a tness function derived from a minimum description length principle. Solutions to the inference problem are evolved by optimizing the parameters of a covering grammar for a given language sample. We provide details...

Sexing of mandible using ramus and condyle in Indian population: a discriminant function analysis

The mandible is the strongest bone of the skull, and it is commonly utilized in forensic anthropology for determination of sex from skeletal remains. It has been extensively studied by both metric and non-metric methods, but for this purpose an intact mandible is often required. This study was conducted in Indian population using discriminant function analysis to calculate the accuracy of two p...
