Stochastic volatility models for ordinal valued time series with application to finance
In this paper we introduce a new class of models, called OSV, by combining an ordinal response model and the idea of stochastic volatility. Corresponding time series occur in high-frequency finance when the stocks are traded on a coarse grid. For parameter estimation we develop an efficient Grouped Move Multigrid Monte Carlo (GM-MGMC) sampler. This sampler is based on a scale transformation gro...
متن کاملThe profitability of trading volatility using real-valued and symbolic models
Essentially, there are two notions of volatility in literature: historical volatility and implied volatility. While measures of the former notion are derived from historical returns by (weighted) averaging over a time window, measures of the latter are estimated from observed option prices. Whatever particular volatility measure one is willing to apply, a central question is that of predictabil...

This paper investigates empirically the effect of volatility of the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar vis-à-vis the euro on U.S. stock market volatility while controlling for a number of drivers of stock return volatility. Using a GARCH(1, 1) model and using weekly data covering the period from the week of January 1, 1999 through the week of January 25, 2010, it is found that the 9/11 terrorist ...
متن کاملInformation and Volatility* Information and Volatility
In an economy of interacting agents with both idiosyncratic and aggregate shocks, we examine how the information structure determines aggregate volatility. We show that the maximal aggregate volatility is attained in a noise free information structure in which the agents confound idiosyncratic and common components of the payoff state, and display excess response to the common component, as in ...

We present empirical evidence for considering volatility of Eurodollar futures as a stochastic process, requiring a generalization of the standard Black-Scholes (BS) model which treats volatility as a constant. We use a previous development of a statistical mechanics of financial markets (SMFM) to model these issues. Ke ywords: options; eurodollar; volatility; statistical mechanics
