Variable Blade Inertia in State-of-the-Art Wind Turbine Structural-Dynamics Models

This paper presents a comparison of two methods to represent variable blade inertia in codes for aero-servo-elastic simulations wind turbines: the nonlinear aeroelastic multi-body model HAWC2 and geometrically exact beam BeamDyn OpenFAST. The main goal is enable these tools simulate dynamic behavior turbine with inertia. However, current state-of-the-art load simulation turbines cannot inertia, so source code must be modified. validity modified proven based on simple model. validation shows very good agreement between HAWC2, an analytical calculation. add-on inertias applied reduce mechanical loads 5-megawatt reference integrated hydraulic-pneumatic flywheel its rotor blades.
