Vietnamese speakers' mispronunciation of Japanese singleton and geminate stops

چکیده
Vietnamese speakers' mispronunciations of Japanese singleton and geminate stops were identified using the category boundary pronounced by native speakers. To clarify characteristics mispronunciations, their speech segment durations analyzed. In comparison with correct pronunciations, speakers mispronounced a stop longer closure shorter preceding consonant-vowel segment, whereas they following segment. These results consistent findings Korean, Taiwanese Mandarin, Thai in previous studies, suggesting that non-native may have common tendency to inadequate anteroposterior segments stops.

Perceptual training of singleton and geminate stops in Japanese language by Korean learners
We aim to build up an effective perceptual training paradigm toward a computer-assisted language learning (CALL) system for second language. This study investigated the effectiveness of the perceptual training on Korean-speaking learners of Japanese in the distinction between geminate and singleton stops of Japanese. The training consisted of identification of geminate and singleton stops with ...
متن کاملSingleton and geminate stops in Finnish - acoustic correlates
The present study examined a variety of acoustic correlates to the stop length contrast in Finnish beyond the duration of the consonant itself. Of interest were the durations of surrounding vowels, the duration of voice onset time (VOT), and the amplitude of the release burst and the following vowel. Results indicated that for geminate stops, VOT is shorter and the amplitude of both the followi...
متن کاملRelational Timing or Absolute Duration? Cue Weighting in the Perception of Japanese Singleton-Geminate Stops
Relational timing has been proposed as a solution to the problem of variability across durational properties of speech arising with changes in speaking rate. The current study investigates the role of absolute and relational timing cues in perception of Japanese stop length (singleton/ geminate) categorization. Absolute (stop duration) and relational (ratio of stop duration to preceding mora du...
متن کاملDurational correlates of singleton-geminate contrast in Hungarian voiceless stops
This paper presents the results of a durational analysis of singleton and geminate stop consonants from Hungarian spontaneous speech. The durational correlates of three types of geminates (i.e., underlying, derived true and fake geminates) are also examined and compared to one another. Results show that single voiceless stops are realized with significantly shorter total and closure duration th...
متن کاملMultiple Cues for the Singleton-Geminate Contrast in Lebanese Arabic: Acoustic Investigation of Stops and Fricatives
This paper investigates the role of temporal and non-temporal cues in the distinction between singleton and geminate medial consonants in Lebanese Arabic. Twenty male and female speakers were recorded producing a word-list with medial singleton and geminate voiced and voiceless stops and fricatives. Vowels preceding and following the medial consonant were /a/ or /aː/. A range of acoustic measur...
