Waffster: Hierarchical waffle charts for budget visualization

Understanding and consuming public budget data is a key issue, helping citizens in gaining insight into their democratic political systems. The goal of this work to present Waffster, user-friendly representation supporting the understanding such data. proposed enables browsing, searching, comparing, presenting hierarchically arranged components quantities budgets. In paper, we first conduct thorough survey online visualizations. Then, collaboration with Le Devoir, Canadian daily newspaper, propose novel unit-based hierarchical design based on waffle charts. We evaluate using controlled user study compare it tree-map layout, case conducted Devoir during provincial election campaign Québec 2018.
