Watching the Cryosphere Thaw: Seismic Monitoring of Permafrost Degradation Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing During a Controlled Heating Experiment

چکیده
Permafrost degradation is rapidly increasing in response to a warming Arctic climate, altering landscapes and damaging critical infrastructure. Solutions for monitoring permafrost thaw dynamics are essential understand biogeochemical feedbacks as well issue warnings hazardous geotechnical conditions. We investigate the feasibility of using permanently installed fiber-optic seismic networks. conducted 2-month campaign during controlled experiment permanent surface orbital vibrator (SOV) 2D-array distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) cables, observed significant (15%) shear-wave velocity (Vs) reductions approximately 2 m depression table beneath heating zone. These observations were validated by time-lapse horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) analysis from three co-located broadband seismometers. The combination SOV DAS provided unique at field scale, basis design development early warning systems thaw.

Field testing of modular borehole monitoring with simultaneous distributed acoustic sensing and geophone vertical seismic profiles at Citronelle, Alabama
A modular borehole monitoring concept has been implemented to provide a suite of well-based monitoring tools that can be deployed cost effectively in a flexible and robust package. The initial modular borehole monitoring system was deployed as part of a CO2 injection test operated by the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership near Citronelle, Alabama. The Citronelle modular monitor...
متن کاملLong-term CO2 production following permafrost thaw
Thawing permafrost represents a poorly understood feedback mechanism of climate change in the Arctic, but with a potential impact owing to stored carbon being mobilized1–5. We have quantified the long-term loss of carbon (C) from thawing permafrost in Northeast Greenland from 1996 to 2008 by combining repeated sediment sampling to assess changes in C stock and >12 years of CO2 production in inc...

متن کاملTerrestrial Freeze-thaw Monitoring on the Tibet Plateau Using Passive Microwave Remote Sensing
The terrestrial cryosphere comprises cold areas of Earth’s land surface where water is either permanently or seasonally frozen. This includes most regions north of 40 degrees North latitude and most mountainous regions where elevation is greater than 1000m [1]. Permafrost is ground that perennially at or below 0 throughout the year. Above the permafrost is the active layer, which experiences su...
متن کاملthe effect of e-64 on the developmental competence of sheep cocs during in vitro maturation
in the present study, the effect of e-64 at different concentrations (0.5, 1, 5 and 10 µm) added to (1) the ivm medium on oocyte nuclear maturation and developmental competence of ovine oocytes, and (2) to the ivc medium on embryonic development of ovine embryos were investigated.
