Water Storage Decisions and Consumptive Use May Constrain Ecosystem Management under Severe Sustained Drought

چکیده
Abstract Drought has impacted the Colorado River basin for past 20 years and is predicted to continue. In response, decisions about how much water should be stored in large reservoirs can consumptively used will necessary. These have potential limit riverine ecosystem management options through effect water‐supply on reservoir elevations. We projected hydrology river temperatures compare outcome of combinations storage scenarios consumptive use limits metrics associated with Grand Canyon. Ecosystem included ability implement designer flows, temperature suitability fishes, fragmentation. compared current operations prioritizing either Lake Mead or Powell combined three levels use. Projected limited environmental flow delivery increased fragmentation regardless where was if not limited. Warmer low are likely, creating suitable conditions non‐native species concern, such as smallmouth bass. Water provided variability flexibility, but less important when available, highlighting importance keeping system provide flexibility achieving goals.

How energy and water availability constrain vegetation water-use along the North Australian Tropical Transect
Energy and water availability were identified as the first order controls of evapotranspiration(ET) in ecohyrodrology. With a ~1,000 km precipitation gradient and distinct wet-dry climate, the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT) was well suited for evaluating how energy andwater availabilities constrain water use by vegetation, but has not been done yet. In this study,we addressed this que...
متن کاملA Drought Indicator based on Ecosystem Responses to Water Availability: The Normalized Ecosystem Drought Index
Drought is one of the most destructive natural disasters causing serious damages to human society, and studies have projected more severe and widespread droughts in the coming decades associated with the warming climate. Although several drought indices have been developed for drought monitoring, most of them were based on large scale environmental conditions rather than ecosystem transitional ...
متن کاملSpatial decisions under uncertainty: fuzzy inference in urban water management
The endogenous complexity and spatial nature of the problems encountered in the urban water management environment present decision-makers with three major problems: (a) in the urban environment, every decision is site-specific, almost on a case-by-case basis, (b) the decision-maker must access, simultaneously, a large amount of information, increasing with rising spatial resolution and (c) the...
متن کاملConsumptive water use to feed humanity -- curing a blind spot
Since in large parts of the world it is getting difficult to meet growing water demands by mobilising more water, the discourse has turned its focus to demand management, governance and the necessary concern for aquatic ecosystems by reserving an “environmental flow” in the river. The latter calls for attention to river depletion which may be expected in response to changes in consumptive water...
متن کاملPorphyrin biosynthesis control under water stress: sustained porphyrin status correlates with drought tolerance in transgenic rice.
A controlled flow of porphyrin metabolites is critical for organisms, but little is known about the control of porphyrin biosynthesis under environmental stress. We monitored transgenic rice (Oryza sativa) plants expressing Myxococcus xanthus protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) for their response to drought stress. Transgenic plants showed significantly improved drought tolerance, as indicated by ...
