Welfare Guarantees in Schelling Segregation

چکیده
Schelling's model is an influential that reveals how individual perceptions and incentives can lead to residential segregation. Inspired by a recent stream of work, we study welfare guarantees complexity in this with respect several measures. First, show while maximizing the social NP-hard, computing assignment agents nodes any topology graph approximately half maximum be done polynomial time. We then consider Pareto optimality, introduce two new optimality notions based on it, establish mostly tight bounds worst-case loss for assignments satisfying these as well such assignments. In addition, tree topologies, it possible decide whether there exists gives every agent positive utility time; moreover, when node has degree at least $2$, always found efficiently.

Tipping Points in Schelling Segregation
Thomas Schelling’s spacial proximity model illustrated how racial segregation can emerge, unwanted, from the actions of citizens acting in accordance with their individual local preferences. One of the earliest agent-based models, it is closely related both to the spin-1 models of statistical physics, and to cascading phenomena on networks. Here a 1-dimensional unperturbed variant of the model ...
متن کاملSegregation Landscape: A New View on the Schelling Segregation Space
Thomas C. Schelling showed that global aggregation may occur, even if it does not correspond to agent preferences; thus, to some extent his model supported the view that segregation is unavoidable, whatever the tolerance is. The segregation landscape approach proposed in this paper is seriously weakening this hypothesis; here, we radically change the perspective and propose using the landscape ...
متن کاملPhase diagram of a Schelling segregation model
The collective behavior in a variant of Schelling’s segregation model is characterized with methods borrowed from statistical physics, in a context where their relevance was not conspicuous. A measure of segregation based on cluster geometry is defined and several quantities analogous to those used to describe physical lattice models at equilibrium are introduced. This physical approach allows ...
متن کاملMinority population in the one-dimensional Schelling model of segregation
The Schelling model of segregation looks to explain the way in which a population of agents or particles of two types may come to organise itself into large homogeneous clusters, and can be seen as a variant of the Ising model in which the system is subjected to rapid cooling. While the model has been very extensively studied, the unperturbed (noiseless) version has largely resisted rigorous an...
متن کاملComputing the Complexity for Schelling Segregation Models
The Schelling segregation models are “agent based” population models, where individual members of the population (agents) interact directly with other agents and move in space and time. In this note we study one-dimensional Schelling population models as finite dynamical systems. We define a natural notion of entropy which measures the complexity of the family of these dynamical systems. The en...
