Delivered oxygen concentrations using low-flow and high-flow nasal cannulas.
INTRODUCTION Nasal cannulas are commonly used to deliver oxygen in acute and chronic care settings; however, there are few data available on delivered fraction of inspired oxygen (F(IO(2))). The purposes of this study were to determine the delivered F(IO(2)) on human subjects using low-flow and high-flow nasal cannulas, and to determine the effects of mouth-closed and mouth-open breathing on F(...
متن کاملThe effects of high-flow vs low-flow oxygen on exercise in advanced obstructive airways disease.
STUDY OBJECTIVES Current options to enhance exercise performance in patients with COPD are limited. This study compared the effects of high flows of humidified oxygen to conventional low-flow oxygen (LFO) delivery at rest and during exercise in patients with COPD. DESIGN Prospective, nonrandomized, nonblinded study. SETTING Outpatient exercise laboratory. PATIENTS Ten patients with COPD, ...
متن کاملEffect of the anatomic reservoir on low-flow oxygen delivery via nasal cannula: constant flow versus pulse flow with portable oxygen concentrator.
BACKGROUND The F(IO(2)) for a nasal cannula with constant flow (CF) depends on the anatomic reservoir (AR), which is affected by changes in frequency and end-expiratory flow. Conversely, pulse flow (PF) devices do not require the AR. The purpose of this study was to compare the F(IO(2)) delivered by a nasal cannula supplied by CF via oxygen tank with that delivered by PF delivered via portable ...
متن کاملLow flow oxygen therapy in infants.
Fifty one infants who were oxygen dependent after treatment for neonatal respiratory disease were entered into a study programme where 100% oxygen was delivered at low flow through a nasal catheter. Thirty five (69%) of the infants were discharged home and the remainder were either discharged to a convalescent hospital or back to their peripheral referring hospital. Excluding repeat admissions ...
متن کاملLow-Flow Anesthesia, Low Fresh Gas Flow, and Oxygen Flush: An Interesting Interplay.
Identification and analysis of critical respiratory alarms during use of an advanced anesthesia workstation is essential in the intraoperative period. We present and discuss a scenario in which there was activation of a fresh gas flow alarm during low-flow anesthesia intraoperatively and use of oxygen flush to counteract it led to a diluted concentration of the inspired anesthetic agent.
