What Can Formal Methods Bring to Systems Biology?
This position paper argues that the operational modelling approaches from the formal methods community can be applied fruitfully within the systems biology domain. The results can be complementary to the traditional mathematical descriptive modelling approaches used in systems biology. We discuss one example: a recent Petri net analysis of C. elegans vulval development.
متن کاملTOF-SIMS in Cosmochemistry
Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) was introduced into cosmochemistry about a decade ago. Major advantages of TOF-SIMS compared to other ion microprobe techniques are (a) parallel detection of all secondary ions with one polarity in a single measurement – both polarities in subsequent analyses, (b) high lateral resolution, (c) sufficient mass resolution for separation of ...
متن کاملMS/MS methodology to improve subcellular mapping of cholesterol using TOF-SIMS.
Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) can be utilized to map the distribution of various molecules on a surface with submicrometer resolution. Much of its biological application has been in the study of membrane lipids, such as phospholipids and cholesterol. Cholesterol is a particularly interesting molecule due to its involvement in numerous biological processes. For many s...
متن کاملC60-ToF SIMS imaging of frozen hydrated HeLa cells.
Sample preparation continues to be a major challenge for secondary ion mass spectrometry studies of biological materials. Maintaining the native hydrated state of the material is important for preserving both chemical and spatial information. Here, we discuss a method which combines a sample wash and dry protocol discussed by Berman et al1 (1) followed by plunge freezing in liquid ethane for a ...
متن کاملToF-SIMS imaging mass spectrometry of microbial systems
Organic biomarkers may greatly aid in the interpretation of geobiological systems, but their significance is often restricted by the loss of spatial information during conventional sample work-up (solvent extraction). Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a quasi-non-destructive technique that simultaneously detects inorganic and organic molecules on solid surfaces, witho...
