When Are Zero Modes Necessary ?

In this paper we develop a way to count zero momentum modes in front-form quantization and apply it to several such approaches: canonical light-cone quantization; Dirac light-cone quantization; reduced phase space quantization ; and Penrose quantization. We also examine which of these light-cone methods are consistent with the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.

When There Are Only Minorities

Intergroup relation perspectives stem from research in Western contexts with clear distinctions between the dominant and nondominant groups. In South Africa, with at least 13 different cultural groups and 11 official languages, no group is dominant in all life spheres. We examine the relationship between identity and in-/out-group orientation across Black-Zulu, Coloured (mixed racial ancestry),...

When Does the Zero - One Law Hold ?

In 1960 Paul Erdos and Alfred Renyi [ER] began the subject of random graphs. The 1985 book of Bela Bollobas [B) provides the standard reference for this field. In modern terminology the random graph G(n, p) is a graph on vertex set [n] = {I, ... , n} where each pair i, j of vertices are adjacent with independent probability p. More accurately, G(n, p) is a probability space over the space of gr...

Calculating MTTF When You Have Zero Failures

How do you calculate the MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) when you have zero failures? If you use the standard equation for MTTF, which is the ratio of total testing time and the number of failures, you get an answer of infinity. In such cases, you define a confidence level between 0 and 100 and then compute the lower bound chi-square value using two degrees of freedom. The equation for calculating ...

How many were there when it mattered

Size matters, particularly in demonstrations. A demonstration is in support of a movement or a cause. The movement has a number of sympathisers. The perceived number of sympathisers is important. If it is seen to be large, then it becomes easier to recruit others to the cause, and to persuade inactive sympathisers to join the demonstrations. Also, if the movement numbers are large then it is mo...
