There is an identified shortage of mathematics and science teachers across Australia many these leave the profession within 3 to 5 years graduating. This paper provides important insights on what motivates people become in Australia. Data drawn from two surveys, one investigating why students might a teacher other examining joined profession, are explored provide unique insight into area need. Using descriptive statistics Spearman’s rho, results suggest contribution society love subject be among top motivators for becoming teacher. Financial reward parental occupation were found less selected motivators. Although differences existed between cohorts suggesting motivations may change, similarities focus future recruitment retention higher education institutions policy makers.
