X-ray Timing of Psr J1852+0040 in Kesteven 79: Evidence of Neutron Stars Weakly Magnetized at Birth
The 105-ms X-ray pulsar J1852+0040 is the central compact object (CCO) in supernova remnant Kes 79. We report a sensitive upper limit on its radio flux density of 12μJy at 2 GHz using the NRAO Green Bank Telescope. Timing using the Newton X-Ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) and the Chandra X-ray Observatory over a 2.4 yr span reveals no significant change in its spin period. The 2σ upper li...
متن کاملCCO Pulsars as Anti-Magnetars: Evidence of Neutron Stars Weakly Magnetized at Birth
Our new study of the two central compact object pulsars, PSR J1210−5226 (P = 424 ms) and PSR J1852+0040 (P = 105 ms), leads us to conclude that a weak natal magnetic field shaped their unique observational properties. In the dipole spin-down formalism, the 2-sigma upper limits on their period derivatives, < 2× 10−16 for both pulsars, implies surface magnetic field strengths of Bs < 3×1011 G and...
متن کاملDiscovery of a 112 Ms X-ray Pulsar in Puppis A: Further Evidence of Neutron Stars Weakly Magnetized at Birth
We report the discovery of 112-ms X-ray pulsations from RX J0822−4300, the compact central object (CCO) in the supernova remnant Puppis A, in two archival Newton X-Ray Multi-Mirror Mission observations taken in 2001. The sinusoidal light curve has a pulsed fraction of 11% with an abrupt 180 change in phase at 1.2 keV. The observed phase shift and modulation are likely the result of emission fro...
متن کاملPrecise Timing of the X-ray Pulsar 1e 1207.4−5209: a Steady Neutron Star Weakly Magnetized at Birth
We analyze all X-ray timing data on 1E 1207.4−5209 in supernova remnant PKS 1209−51/52 gathered in 2000–2005, and find a highly stable rotation with P = 424.130751(4) ms and Ṗ = (9.6±9.4)×10 s s. This refutes previous claims of large timing irregularities in these data. In the dipole spin-down formalism, the 2σ upper limit on Ṗ implies an energy loss rate Ė < 1.5×10 ergs s, surface magnetic fie...
متن کاملOn cooling of magnetized neutron stars
Cooling of neutron stars with dipole magnetic fields is simulated using a realistic model of the anisotropic surface temperature distribution produced by magnetic fields. Suppression of the electron thermal conductivity of outer stellar layers across the field increases thermal isolation of these layers near the magnetic equator. Enhancement of the radiative and longitudinal electron thermal co...
