You Talking to Me? Cadherin and Integrin Crosstalk in Biomaterial Design

While much work has been done in the design of biomaterials to control integrin-mediated adhesion, less emphasis put on functionalization materials with cadherin ligands. Yet, cell–cell contacts combination cell–matrix interactions are key driving embryonic development, collective cell migration, epithelial mesenchymal transition, and cancer metastatic processes, among others. This review focuses incorporation both integrin ligands biomaterial design, promote what is called “adhesive crosstalk.” First, structure function cadherins their role eliciting mechanotransductive by themselves or mechanosensing, introduced. Then, that mimic interactions, recent applications get insights fundamental biology tissue engineering, critically discussed.
