A Semi-Lagrangian Method for Turbulence Simulations Using Mixed Spectral Discretizations
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a semi-Lagrangian method for integrating the three-dimensional incompressible NavierStokes equations. We develop stable schemes of second-order accuracy in time and spectral accuracy in space. Specifically, we employ a spectral element (Jacobi) expansion in one direction and Fourier collocation in the other two directions. We demonstrate exponential convergence for this method, and investigate the non-monotonic behavior of the temporal error for an exact three-dimensional solution. We also present direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel-flow, and demonstrate the stability of this approach even for marginal resolution unlike its Eulerian counterpart. ∗Corresponding author, [email protected]

A Semi-Lagrangian High-Order Methodfor Navier–Stokes Equations
We present a semi-Lagrangian method for advection–diffusion and incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. The focus is on constructing stable schemes of secondorder temporal accuracy, as this is a crucial element for the successful application of semi-Lagrangian methods to turbulence simulations. We implement the method in the context of unstructured spectral/hp element discretization, which allo...
متن کاملGYSELA , a full- f global gyrokinetic Semi-Lagrangian code for ITG turbulence simulations
This work addresses non-linear global gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven turbulence with the GYSELA code. The particularity of GYSELA code is to use a fixed grid with a Semi-Lagrangian (SL) scheme and this for the entire distribution function. The 4D non-linear drift-kinetic version of the code already showns the interest of such a SL method which exhibits good pro...
متن کاملWave Evolution in Water Bodies using Turbulent MPS Simulation
Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) which is a meshless and full Lagrangian method is employed to simulate nonlinear hydrodynamic behavior in a wide variety of engineering application including free surface water waves. In the present study, a numerical particle-based model is developed by the authors using MPS method to simulate different wave problems in the coastal waters. In this model flui...
متن کاملFMM-based vortex method for simulation of isotropic turbulence on GPUs, compared with a spectral method
The Lagrangian vortex method offers an alternative numerical approach for direct numerical simulation of turbulence. The fact that it uses the fast multipole method (FMM)—a hierarchical algorithm for N-body problems with highly scalable parallel implementations—as numerical engine makes it a potentially good candidate for exascale systems. However, there have been few validation studies of Lagr...
متن کامل1. Wavelet estimation of coherent modes in turbulence; 2. Development of spectral-element and finite-volume methods; 3. Other research
Wavelet analysis is now a method of well recognized effectiveness in a range of disciplines, including atmospheric science e.g., 39 publications from NCAR from [10] to [11]. Our recent research includes applying a wavelet-based criterion to identify coherent structures in turbulence simulations, §2.1. Also, as detailed in recent reports [6 §1; 7; 8 & op. cit. therein], a need is well known and ...
